Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato

The museum currently displays more than 100 mummies of all ages dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. Most of them have surprisingly well-preserved facial expressions, which It makes them look like they're alive. The mummy collection was formed due to a local law that required the payment of taxes to keep the remains in the cemetery. If the relatives did not pay the taxes, the remains were exhumed and stored in a vault in the cemetery. In the 1860s, the mummified remains were found to be in a good state of preservation due to the dry and cold conditions inside the vault.
