Devils Tower National Monument

Devils Tower is the first national monument dedicated by Teddy Roosevelt in 1906.Standing as the largest example of columnar jointing in the world, the monolith rises dramatically. It was once entirely hidden below the earth's surface until millions of years of weathering and erosion stripped away the softer sedimentary rock layers.Long before it was mapped by early explorers, the site was deeply sacred to Northern Plains tribes—including the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Kiowa—who widely know it as Bear Lodge.We will spend about 2 hours here, enough time to walk the 1.3 mile trail around the monument.Because this is a 250-mile expedition, how you travel matters. The canyon floor follows a rushing, crystal-clear mountain stream, flanked on both sides by towering, 1,000-foot limestone and sandstone palisades that feature rock formations predating the Grand Canyon. Cascading approximately 60 feet, Bridal Veil Falls is the most accessible waterfall in the canyon. The Falls flows intensely in the spring and slows considerably in late summer and fall. it is located adjacent to a large parking lot to accommodate sightseers.
