Overview
Welcome to Split. At its ancient heart is Diocletian's Palace, which is 1,700 years old. It's on UNESCO's World Heritage List too. Walk through its basement halls, stand among the Egyptian granite columns of the Peristyle and rub Bishop Gregory's lucky toe at the Golden Gate. You'll follow the original Roman streets past the emperor's mausoleum, now a cathedral honoring a saint he had executed. Your narrator, Ivica Profaca, is a licensed local guide and longtime journalist. He shows you the corners most visitors miss: one of Europe's oldest active synagogues in the old Jewish Quarter, and Prokurative Square, a mayor's unfinished copy of Venice's St Mark's Square that cost him his fortune. You start on the French-built Riva and finish at Fruit Square.
